KKR Janakeeya Medical Clinic began with one person’s determination to make healthcare more humane and accessible.
Founder K. Kunhiraman, also identified publicly as Kannankayi or Kannankai Kunjiraman, worked as a stone mason from a young age. After experiencing the emotional and financial hardship of seeking treatment for his mother — and seeing similar difficulties faced by others — he resolved to create a medical facility for his own community.
What began as an ambitious idea became a building shaped by his own hands. Public accounts describe how he laid the stones himself, mobilised personal resources, and earned the support of doctors, staff, family members, friends, and local residents. The result was a clinic founded not as a commercial dream, but as an act of community service.
